How splitting a PDF works

Splitting takes one PDF and divides its pages into two or more separate PDF files, based on rules you choose — page ranges, a fixed page count, or one file per page. It's useful when a single document actually contains several unrelated things: a scanned batch of invoices, multiple chapters bundled together, or a contract that needs to be separated into signature-ready sections.

After you upload a file, this tool reads its total page count and renders a thumbnail of every page directly in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere. From there you can define custom ranges (pages 1 to 5 as one file, 6 to 10 as another), set a fixed size like "every 10 pages," or extract every page as its own file in one click. As you adjust the settings, the thumbnail grid recolors live to show exactly which pages will land in which output file, so you can check the split is right before running it. The tool then copies the matching pages into brand-new PDF documents, byte-for-byte, with no recompression.

Common use cases

  • Pulling a single signed page out of a longer scanned document
  • Dividing a large report into per-chapter files for separate distribution
  • Cutting a long scan into fixed-size chunks — e.g. every 10 pages — for easier review
  • Separating a multi-invoice scan into individual invoices
  • Breaking a bulky PDF into smaller pieces that are easier to email

When you split into more than one part, the results download together as a single .zip so you don't have to click through multiple downloads one by one — or download just the one part you need on its own.

Split PDF — frequently asked questions

It takes one PDF and divides its pages into two or more separate PDF files, based on page ranges (or a rule like "every 10 pages") that you choose — the original file itself isn't changed.

Yes. Add as many page ranges as you need — each range becomes its own PDF file, downloaded together in a .zip.

"Page ranges" lets you define custom from/to ranges (e.g. 1–5 and 6–12). "Every N pages" cuts the file into equal chunks of a size you set — handy for splitting a 100-page scan into 10-page pieces without typing out every range. "Extract every page" turns each page into its own file in one click.

Yes — a page-by-page preview grid updates live as you set your ranges or page count, with each part colored and numbered, so you can check the split is right before running it.

Yes. Set a range's "from" and "to" to the same page number to pull out a single page, or use "extract every page" to get every page as its own file at once.

Not directly — an encrypted PDF needs to be unlocked first. If you upload one, you'll get a clear message pointing you to the Unlock PDF tool; run that first, then come back and split the unlocked file.

No. Pages are copied exactly as they are in the source file — no recompression, no re-rendering.

No artificial limit — the only real constraint is your device's own memory, since splitting happens entirely in your browser, not on a server.

No installation, no account, and no browser extension — it works directly on this page.
